Introducing IronLogin Lite
Today I’m proud to announce the first public release of IronLogin Lite, a free introductory application that enables you to quickly and easily add user friendly password protection to your website using an integrated installer. IronLogin Lite is the first product in a planned family of security products designed to make both end user’s and system administrator’s lives a lot easier. For a quick introduction please try the demo or for more in depth information please check out the searchable FAQ.
How does IronLogin Lite make your end user’s lives easier? Instead of a plain focus stealing browser popup dialog your users are presented an in-page login dialog that you can fully customize. Once logged in, each subsequently protected page is shown with an “authentication bar” that shows a custom message from you, the user’s login info and a link to logout. You can see this in action for yourself in the demo.
How does IronLogin Lite make your life easier? The integrated installer means you can quickly setup password protection on any website without messing with your site’s configuration files. If you already have an Apache .htpasswd file the installer will automatically use that or you can quickly create a new password file directly in the installer.
There is a lot more technical details in the FAQ but here is a quick rundown: IronLogin Lite requires Apache with mod_rewrite enabled and PHP 4.3.2 with the session, date and pcre (regular expressions) extensions enabled. Login information is stored in PHP sessions and the login API is secured by accepted POSTed data only, using httponly cookies and regenerating the session cookie both on each login or login attempt.
I hope you try IronLogin Lite and follow the progress of IronLogin Pro, the paid version that is currently under development. IronLogin Pro will allow you to hookup multiple backend authentication systems like LDAP, Active Directory or Radius servers and manage multiple protected sites from a single admin interface along with a host of other feature additions.
